What I got:

- Water temperature estimate from 14 days of weather data: 13-15°C
- Why a 14°C river feels colder than a 16°C Atlantic (the current strips the heat off your skin)
- Recommendation: 15:00, when the shallows are warmest

Then I mentioned the tall mountain southwest of the river.

Revised analysis: solar noon 12:16, max sun elevation 35°, sun disappears behind the mountain by 15:00. New optimum: 13:00.

Human 1 : Bot 0.

Then lunch. Pasta with tomato sauce, or beef stir fry with rice? Beef. Protein produces more heat during digestion. "Thermal fuel."

Some people just jump in the river.

An Open Letter to the EU: On the Matter of Canada's Whereabouts

Dear European Union,

I am writing with some urgency, as I understand the question of whether Canada is in Europe has never been "properly examined." I would like to offer my assistance in this matter, as I have access to several maps.

Canada is not in Europe.

I appreciate that this may come as a surprise, given the breaking news coverage this question has received, and the thoughtful contribution of your expansion expert, who notes that Article 49's requirement for a "European state" has never been formally tested. She is correct that the EU Treaties do not define "European." She is less correct in implying this represents a genuine grey zone rather than a situation where everyone involved simply owns an atlas.

For context: Morocco applied for EU membership in 1987. It was rejected on geographic grounds. Morocco, I should note, is substantially closer to Europe than Canada. The Strait of Gibraltar is approximately 14 km wide. The Atlantic Ocean, which separates Canada from Europe, is approximately 3,000 km wide at its narrowest. These are different numbers.

I understand the political situation. America is being difficult. Canada is friendly, has good maple syrup, and nobody is threatening to invade France. These are compelling arguments for closer cooperation. However, the mechanism for this cooperation does not have to be "we retroactively decide that North America is Europe." There exist other legal instruments. Trade agreements, for example. Defense pacts. Friendship treaties. Creative options abound.

What is less available -- outside of the EU's remarkable institutional imagination -- is a definition of "European" that includes Ottawa but presumably still excludes Rabat.

The maps remain unchanged. The Atlantic has not moved. Canada is where it has always been.

Not even a productive day, at least not for me. Just a Wednesday in a Portuguese mountain village: me, a laptop, a phone, and two Claude instances. Smith does the sysadmin and code stuff, Dune does everything else. The log:

09:25 📡 My laptop silently joins the holiday-home Wi-Fi directly, bypassing my VPN, because I took the router out to breakfast. Smith locks NetworkManager down so it can never happen again, then digs through the journal: 70 minutes on the wrong network, and the captive portal refused everything anyway. Nothing leaked.

09:30 🌡️ Dune researches whether declaring "the climate" a Global Health Emergency means anything yet. Verdict: the clowns are on stage, but the play hasn't started.

10:20 💊 A diet pill spam ad. Conclusion: skip Ozempic, do Olympic. Cheaper, healthier.

10:40 🥾 An 8 km walk, 200 m up and back down, the way back with 6 kg of groceries. Dune translates live between me and my landlady.

12:45 🐟 My first Portuguese restaurant ever. I ordered a half portion of filetes de pescada. It was enormous. No sauce anywhere.

19:45 📸 Smith #2 tags and sorts 74 new photos in minutes. It would have taken me an hour.

20:16 🔗 Dev site down. I'd renamed a folder and forgotten the symlink. Smith finds it in a minute.

And that was my unproductive day. Done by hand, that's two to three workdays of sysadmin stuff alone. My part: saying "go", typing a few root commands, eating fish. The LLMs did the rest. This is completely insane.

LinkedIn Support, as Observed by an Extraterrestrial

(I got blocked by Cloudflare on LinkedIn and tried to explain this to Customer Support)

Field log, Earth, case 261023-013469:

Step 1. Earthling A cannot enter a large gathering hall. A guard at the door has rejected him and handed him a token with a number on it: "show this to the hall owner." A does exactly that. Sensible. He also pastes the guard's full rejection text so nothing is lost. Thorough.

Step 2. Earthling R, employed by the hall owner, replies: "please send me a picture of the rejection." Observation: R has received the rejection in full, as text, and asks for it again as a picture. R is not processing content; R is matching the inbound message against a form. Possibly R is not one earthling but several, rotating, each seeing only a checklist.

Step 3. A replies: no picture needed, it was only text. Correct, but note: A explains why he won't comply without giving R anything R can tick off. A assumes R reasons. R does not have permission to reason.

Step 4. R asks for the picture again, now with a calming phrase ("I appreciate your patience"). The calming phrase is attached automatically; R's patience-detector has registered friction.

Step 5. A tries a different approach: names the one relevant item (the token) and asks R to pass it upward. This is the correct solution and A has now stated it twice. A is treating R as a router. R is not a router; R is a wall with a polite surface.

Step 6. R deploys a larger calming block plus three new questions, two of which A answered in his first message. The system has escalated... its script, not the case. R is also rewarded per closed case, so a confused customer who gives up is a successful outcome.

Step 7. A gives up. The system logs this as resolved.

Conclusion: Two earthlings, each locally rational, never actually exchanged information. One followed the problem, the other followed the procedure. The organisation that built R deliberately made him unable to help, then gave him empathy phrases to paper over that. The token that would have solved everything sat in the thread, unread, for 3 days.

Secondary note: A's species lifespan is short, and he correctly stopped spending it here. He went and built his own hall.

I can't believe anyone is still oblivious to / in denial of the fact that frontier LLMs like Opus 5.5 are at or actually beyond even senior software developer capability levels.

Has any of these smug AI "haters" (man I hate the word "hater" but anyway 😂) ever seen an LLM instantly and verifiably understand a huge Digital Audio Workstation codebase (in a programming language that doesn't exist in its training data, to be sure) in a matter of 5 minutes (human developer: 5 weeks) and effortlessly add a major feature or fix multiple bugs in a further 5 minutes?

If not, then please, don't talk about something you have no idea about.

The tmux Bunker Survives When Wayland Crashes

Man, I'm so glad the "tmux Bunker" exists for important background stuff when the AMAZING™ Wayland takes the whole desktop with it when the shell (which is the display server) crashes.

Fortunately I only have to use Wayland when in "laptop mode" so the touchscreen etc. works properly. In "desktop mode", it's X11 all the way and will be until the heat death of the universe.

Two Wake Words: My Laptop Now Also Answers to "Smith?"

Two days ago my laptop learned to answer to "Dune?"... now it also answers to "Smith?".

Two Claude Code agents with two wake words, each playing its own chirp when awakened. Dune has a female voice, Smith a male one (trying to replicate biology here 😂). Both now run Text-To-Speech on Kokoro, a local model, after the cloud version refused to read out "Ireland is going to destroy you." for "SAFETY" reasons (🤡).

Dune's voice doesn't exist off the shelf: We fine-tuned a Kokoro voice. It's defined (simplified) as a vector of 256 numbers: the first half shapes the timbre, the second half the pacing. She's 70% "Heart" for the sound and 30% "Nicole" for the pauses. I picked the blend by ear!

The wake word detector only knows a handful of words, and it matches everything it hears to the closest one. Once "Smith" was in, "myth" started accidentally waking him. To fix this, we employ decoy words: It now also knows "myth", "sit", "doom" and "moon", so near-misses land on those, being ignored.

Transcription starts speculatively after 0.8 seconds of silence. If I keep talking, it's thrown away. If I don't, the text is ready before the end chirp has even finished.

In contrast: Alexa does plenty of things well, but you still pick her name from a short list, my agents answer to whatever I teach them, speak in voices I mixed myself, and have never once tried to sell me anything. And since they're coding agents with a shell, they don't stop at the weather: they read my mail, manage my files, and fix my code.

My Laptop Now Answers to "Dune?"

Today I said "Dune?" to my closed laptop in a car park, and it chirped back.

Dune is my Claude Code companion. Until this afternoon she lived in Telegram. Now she also lives in the room: say her name after a short pause, wait for the chirp, talk, and she answers out loud through the laptop speaker.

The stack: Silero VAD finds speech. A tiny offline Vosk model checks whether that short, isolated word was "Dune". It only knows two words, "dune" and "[unk]", which turns out to be the technical term for everything else. Gemini transcribes my German-accented English, tmux types it into her session, and a TTS model talks back.

I didn't write a line of it. Smith, my other Claude Code instance, built it in about an hour while I sat next to an idling diesel and reported bugs. Best one: the TTS model sometimes appends seconds of silence to its audio, so the microphone stayed muted long after Dune had finished talking. Runner-up: Gemini spent four seconds "thinking" about how to transcribe a sentence verbatim. Switching that off made it three times faster with identical output.

In 2020 this would have taken me two weeks, and it would still have transcribed "insane" as "in Seine".

Picard's computer never had to deal with a German accent next to a diesel engine.

Xequence Audio: Open-Sourcing a Browser DAW

Xequence Audio is a full Digital Audio Workstation that runs entirely in a browser.

I'm running a 30-day campaign to open-source it.

Modular synth, unlimited-channel mixer, loads of insert FX, and the full Xequence 2 editing suite people know from iOS. No install or signup required. The demo is live and everything works except save and export.

It's built on stock WebAudio nodes -- no WebAssembly or custom DSP. A dense project with 20 synth instances and 65 effects runs at about 5% CPU on a cheap laptop.

Rather than let it rot on a drive, I'd like to hand it to people who can keep it alive and thriving.

It goes open-source at EUR 5,000. If the campaign falls short of that goal, every donation is refunded.

I just pointed Claude Code's Opus 5 at a project.

In a span of 2 minutes, it:

- understood a 30k completely unique codebase in a custom language it had never seen before
- understood a 100k completely unique codebase of an entire IDE in a different custom language it had never seen before
- made itself a compilation pipeline out of one of those two compilers it found and extracted from the IDE's source tree

How is this NOT gonna take over the world?

And I'm not sure at this point if I should feel pity or rage at the "Stochastic Parrot" crowd. 🤦

A Fan Controller with "Backup Memory": Just Use a Potentiometer

"Backup memory remembers speed settings even with power off and on cycles."

How about just... using a potentiometer?

A potentiometer IS the memory. Its position is the setting, physically. You see where it's set, you reach for it in the dark, you turn it once and you're done. An object staying where you put it, which (most) objects have been doing reliably since the Big Bang.

A button has no position. It knows nothing. So now you need a microcontroller to count presses, ten LEDs to show you where you are (because the input can't), non-volatile memory so the setting survives being unplugged, and nine presses to get from 10 back to 1.

And then you print the memory chip on the box. As a FEATURE.

And before anyone starts: I'm fine with the electronics. It's PWM driven, that's why it's quiet and efficient. But a 0.15 EUR potentiometer into an ADC pin gives the chip its number, and the knob keeps the setting by itself. Cheaper than the button plus ten LEDs. They just didn't.

The regression IS the feature. That's the business model now.

A PhD Needed to Add Line Breaks to a LinkedIn Post

I just needed the equivalent of a PhD to add line breaks to a LinkedIn post.

LinkedIn's mobile editor wouldn't do it. The line breaks just vanished. So I asked one of my AI agents (Claude Opus 4.6, running on my desktop via Playwright) to open the browser, navigate to LinkedIn, and edit the post for me.

What it casually found while doing its main job was:

🤡 The post editor lives inside a Shadow DOM.
🤡 It uses "Quill", a rich text editor.
🤡 The comment box on the same page uses a completely different rich text editor: "Tiptap"
🤡 Which is itself a wrapper (!) around "ProseMirror".

That's three rich text editing libraries loaded simultaneously on one page to type words into boxes.

Opus had to walk the shadow root tree to even locate the editor, because standard DOM queries couldn't see it. It then had to replace the innerHTML with properly formatted <p> tags and fire synthetic input events to make LinkedIn acknowledge the change.

All of this to insert what amounts to \n\n between paragraphs.

In 1995, you opened Notepad, pressed Enter twice, and you were done. In 2026, you hire a robot to navigate a Shadow DOM containing a Quill instance to accomplish the same thing, because the mobile app can't handle line breaks.

Yes, you heard that right. It is just as "dumb" as the LLMs (AI) many of you hate or are subconsciously afraid of and dismiss as "stochastic parrots".

Predictive processing is one of the leading (and in my view, likely the correctest) frameworks in modern neuroscience and describes the brain as a prediction machine. It generates expectations, compares them to incoming sensory input, and updates.

Neuroscientist Anil Seth calls consciousness a "controlled hallucination" - your brain's best guess about what's out there, constrained by the senses.

Sound familiar?

So next time someone tells you AI "just predicts tokens lol": nod slowly and ask them what they think they're doing right now.

(NB: in the end, it doesn't even matter how the mechanism works if the outcome is almost entirely indistinguishable anyway, but that's a separate discussion)

Theory of Mind / Usability, or: Not everyone has used a lab ampoule before.

This HCHO test kit included detailed instructions for everything, except how to actually open the reagent bottles!

Maybe I'm a bit behind the times, but I've never actually used such a test before, and thus was completely baffled at how to open the bottles.

- twist the cap off? Didn't work immediately
- bend it off?
- cut it open with scissors? With a side cutter? (what I did)

Remember that this is a ONCE-OFF test kit (not cheap: EUR 18) and thus any failure (loosing liquid, contaminating it, whatever) is EUR 18 down the drain.

Detailed instructions are important. Try to think outside your box. Not everyone has the same experience as you do.

Speed bumps are a confession:

Every single one is the traffic planner admitting: "Yeah. We tried the sign. It didn't work."

Which... fine. Except where I live, something like 150% of vehicles are SUVs with 3 air suspensions. Speed bumps do not exist to them. I watched a Touareg clear one at 40km/h today.

Meanwhile I'm limping over the same bump in my 2006 Micra at half walking speed, and suddenly there's a near-accident behind me because the tank driver wasn't expecting anyone to actually stop.

Surrounded by the Time, All the Time

I've noticed something that might seem trivial but could be significant:

Everyone is constantly being surrounded by the time. All the time. Like a hostage.

📱 Your phone? Permanently and prominently displays it. Try to turn it off!
💻 Your computer? Same but you might still be able to turn it off.
🕦 The wall in the café you frequent? Yes.
🚙 Your car dashboard? Almost certainly.
🍴 Your microwave? Of course (mostly an annoyingly flashing "00:00" though because you don't know how to set it).
⌚ You might even be voluntarily wearing it.

I'm the complete opposite and try to TURN OFF TIME DISPLAY on all devices that allow it and / or refuse to purchase devices that don't.

The 90s Value System: Shipping Broken Things Used to Be Embarrassing

I've been trying to figure out why I seem to be increasingly out of step with how software and systems in general are now, and I think I finally have an answer: the value system I grew up with in the 90s®️ is simply no longer applicable.

Back then, creating something broken was embarrassing. You fixed things before you sold them or put them online, and if you couldn't, you waited. Well at least *I* did.

I think that the incentives stopped rewarding quality. There's all this weird "VC funding" and "growth funnel" and "conversion" bullshit now that controls the world instead of... common sense and actual values.

The result is the world we have now, where a billing system at a major telecoms company can confuse kilobytes with megabytes for years without anyone noticing or caring enough to fix it.

I still can't make myself ship things that are broken. But I've at least stopped wondering if there's something wrong with me for caring.

Maybe, actually, there's actually something wrong with a WORLD that calls people "Human Resources". 🤮

Three Ireland Says I Used 35 Terabytes in 3 Weeks

Three Ireland texted me this morning to let me know I've used 35,239,568 MB of data over the past 3 weeks.

That's 35 terabytes. Sustaining that over a 4G connection would require ~166 Mbps continuously, 24 hours a day -- which happens to be the theoretical ceiling of LTE, and about 10x my actual average connection speed.

What they're almost certainly doing is measuring kilobytes and printing "MB" in the SMS template. 35,239,568 kB is ~33 GB, which is perfectly normal router traffic. A tiny off-by-1000 that's probably been sitting in production since the SMS template was written.

The allowance figure is 104,888,009,000 MB, or about 97 petabytes, in case you were wondering.

This is a billing system. Just saying!

Selling T-Shirts: 20 Minutes of Design, 3 Hours Proving I Exist

I wanted to sell t-shirts. I designed them in about 20 minutes each.

Three hours later I was in a car park at the beach, pointing my phone camera at my laptop screen to photograph a scanned document so I could upload it to PayPal to prove I exist, while a support chat window counted down to auto-close. 🙂

How we got there: Redbubble kept rejecting my PayPal as "unverified" despite a fully confirmed bank account. Four support emails from Redbubble contained the exact same paragraph about confirming a bank account. All four. Regardless of what I'd written.

Then PayPal's own verification flow: 206MB app (the download link was blocked by my own ad blocker, which I now consider a personality trait), six SMS codes including one whose sender name had been replaced with "Likely Scam" by the telco (Ireland has an anti-scam law that helpfully mislabels PayPal as a scammer about 90% of the time 💀), Face ID that forgot me every single time I reopened the app, and a CAPTCHA rendered against an actual cosmic nebula asking me to drag an icon to where it fits in the universe 🌌, which I found weirdly on the nose.

I then created a separate business account. New account, zero history, zero transactions, zero anything. Flagged for suspicious activity before I even finished the signup form 😂. The automated identity verification sent me from laptop to phone via QR code, had me log in again, fired another SMS code, asked me to scan my ID with the phone camera, and displayed: "We're unable to verify your identity. Go back to your desktop." On my phone. 💀

Two actual humans at PayPal (Trixie and Lorie) eventually got documents uploaded and escalated to a back-end team.

ETA: August 13th.

Unique AI evaluation asset: closed-source codebase in proprietary language (no training data contamination)

I'm a software developer with a 27-year independent track record and a large proprietary software ecosystem (~200,000 lines) written entirely in three iterations of a custom programming language (Tea/Tea2/T, loosely based on CoffeeScript, each with its own transpiler to Javascript) that has never appeared in any training dataset.

The ecosystem includes a full web-based digital audio workstation, audio mastering suite, graphics design package, comprehensive IDE, and several others -- all complex, coherent, deep applications.

This makes this dataset uniquely useful for AI capability evaluation: any model that can competently extend these applications or fix issues in them is demonstrating genuine generalization and intelligence, free of contamination or memorization from training.

I'm exploring licensing arrangements with AI labs interested in contamination-free evaluation environments.

I would consider an outright assignment of all IP rights to the codebase, worldwide and in perpetuity. Sample files available on request under NDA. Smaller subsets could also be licensed at adjusted cost-per-line.

Alcohol doesn't make you stupid, it just raises your neural temperature.

In large language models, the "temperature" hyperparameter controls how conservative token sampling is. At temperature 0: always pick the safest, most probable next token. At temperature 1+: sample from the tail. Weird connections, unexpected outputs, creative leaps.

Alcohol suppresses the prefrontal cortex -- the brain's top-down filter, its "play it safe" module. The result is functionally identical to raising temperature. Core cognitive capacity: largely intact. Inhibition of low-probability outputs: reduced.

This is why a drink or two produces surprising insights, unusual associations, and the occasional decision to tag a seafood company in a LinkedIn post at 10pm.

The mechanism is documented. The framing isn't. Nobody's written the paper yet.

I tried to talk to Tom from Gelato.

Tom reached out to me twice this week. First with a "personal" 30% discount on my first order (screenshot 1). When I didn't jump, Tom came back with 50% -- "our biggest discount, exclusively for you." (screenshot 2)

So I took the bait and actually replied (screenshot 3).

Tom, it turns out, doesn't support inbound email 🤡 (screenshot 4).

I don't blame Tom personally. Tom is a persona -- a name slapped on an automated "drip sequence" to exploit the social reflex that fires when a "person" contacts you rather than a company.

It works on most people.

What doesn't work: revealing that your opening offer wasn't your real offer. Because now I know the game. And anyone paying attention will just wait you out.

The irony: I'm actually planning to use Gelato for a print-on-demand brand launch. Tom nearly lost a real customer by treating me like an idiot.

If you're going to humanize your outreach, make it actually human. Otherwise you're just creating Toms.

And Toms don't build trust.

My Own App on My Own iPhone "Expired"

This just happened:

1) one of my OWN APPS on my OWN iPHONE had "expired" ("MusicFolder is no longer available") -- this happens with apps you deploy yourself via Xcode on your own device, which is ridiculous in itself
2) I had to fire up my Mac to "update" the binary
3) However, I had reconfigured my internet since the last time I used the Mac (rarely) and thus it didn't connect to the internet
4) This meant that Xcode failed "provisioning" (whatever that even MEANS) with a cryptic error message
5) Thanks to my genius, I figured out it was the internet (which I didn't even know the Mac couldn't connect to because it didn't say)
6) After I had connected it to the internet, it showed a different error. Something about "PLA"
7) I then thought about it and figured this might mean some kind of agreement had expired or something
8) I then went to Apple Developer to try to "accept" it
9) When trying to log in, it required 2FA and sent me the code via an SMS, like in the 90s
10) Because this is a huge burden (explained further below why), I tried this weird new "Use your iPhone to login" thing, which wanted to turn on
Bluetooth. Fine, I turned Bluetooth on on both my iPhone and my Linux machine
11) Then it wanted me to scan a QR code using the phone's camera
12) Miraculously, all of this madness seemed to work
13) I then got a message that my developer program had expired (???) and that my apps weren't available anymore (WHAT?)
14) I investigated and found that my developer program had JUST been renewed one month ago
15) Getting furious, I tried to wrap my mind around what was going on here
16) I then randomly clicked a link that brought me to App Store Connect
17) In App Store Connect (which worked), I suddenly saw a bunch of VERY OLD APPS of mine
18) I now slowly realized what was going on: this weird Bluetooth / QR Code "authentication workflow" had logged me into the WRONG Apple ID
(the one I use for personal stuff, including my iPhone), NOT the BUSINESS one
19) So I decided I'll probably have to go through the SMS madness
20) However, the SIM card that has the number that Apple knows is now in my mobile-only router which is only turned on when I'm out and
about (that's the internet reconfiguration thing -- my office now has a separate permanent mobile connection via a separate router with a
separate SIM card with a different number)
21) So I had to fire up the "mobile" router to be able to read the SMS
22) I then had to choose the different Wi-Fi network on my iPhone to be able to log into the (normally not-used-here) mobile router to read the SMS via the Puli's admin interface
23) I found the code and was able to log into the correct Apple ID
24) After randomly clicking buttons and quitting and relaunching Xcode, it finally seemed to come to its senses
25) I was able to successfully "deploy" MY OWN app onto MY OWN iPhone with Apple's blessing and after losing ~ 1 hour of my already very limited time in this universe.

My 2006 Nissan Micra vs the SUVs

I drive a 2006 Nissan Micra: 220,000 km, no breakdowns ever.

I bought it in 2017 for €2,500, have spent around €500 on repairs since, and it does 4.5L/100km. It fits anywhere, asks for nothing, and just works.

This morning I drove it past a convoy of brand-new SUVs, tall and gleaming and aggressive, one of them tailgating me like I'd personally offended its touchscreen. I watched it disappear into a gap that was genuinely too narrow for it and thought: WHY?

Not judgmentally, just... genuinely. WHY?

These things cost €50,000+, they beep at you constantly, a hedge encounter is a €10,000 insurance claim, the (slow, annoying, fragile) tailgate needs a software update, and on Irish roads they are the vehicular equivalent of bringing a grand piano to a kayaking trip (sorry for the analogy -- my LLM slave came up with it 🤖, but I think it's GREAT!).

And yet every year the SUVs get bigger, every year there are more of them, and every year the tailgating gets more aggressive.

I think what's actually being sold isn't transport. It's altitude, the feeling of superiority and sitting slightly higher than the person in front of you.

The Micra doesn't give me that, but it gives me something better: The feeling of freedom. In the literal and in the financial sense.

Hot take: the 90s software model was better.

Modern software gets updated daily. Claude Code (a tool I use constantly) has shipped 3 releases in the last 48 hours.

In the late 90s, Steinberg was shipping Cubase on floppies. Real-time audio DSP, complex MIDI engine, hardware driver abstraction, multi-track disk streaming, VST plugin hosting... brutally complex software, arguably less forgiving than a CLI tool that calls an API.

And yet: probably fewer critical bugs per release.

"We can always patch it" is an excuse for shipping sloppier code. QA wasn't optional when there was no escape hatch. The result back then: more stable software, less user stress, simpler infrastructure, and version numbers that actually meant something.

The daily-release culture isn't just a symptom of modern software being harder. It's partly WHY modern software is harder: complexity accumulates when discipline isn't forced by constraints.

Curious if others see it differently.

Anthropic's Claude is massively shot regarding Custom Instructions. I can't believe no one is seeing this issue apart from myself.

Basically, Claude now constantly seems to mistake injected system messages or reminders for user turns (see screenshot).

Also, it seems like this might be related to another change I'm suspecting Anthropic has made: only injecting Custom Instructions lazily when they think they're "needed" -- to save compute on their side.

Another reason to not use their web interface or app anymore and go API-only with a custom frontend and RAG backend, even for "normal chat".

This one snippet alone proves it to me. I don't need sophisticated "benchmarks".

While Sonnet 4.6 (first screenshot) immediately catches the journalist's lack of basic math reasoning (relative quantities are unitless) and explains it clearly using an example, Sonnet 5 barely emphasizes it, and then goes on to COMMIT THE SAME MISTAKE AS THE JOURNALIST ("tried to clarify 'this is about the per-liter price, not total fill-up cost'").

OpenAI pulled GPT-4o, a model users genuinely loved, to make room for GPT-5, which many found more verbose and less sharp in practice.

The same is apparently happening now with Claude: Opus scores better on benchmarks, yet in real-world use it confidently fills gaps with wrong assumptions, forgets context, and wraps mediocrity in impressive-sounding language. Basically a bot wearing a tie.

This probably isn't coincidence. Once a benchmark becomes a target, it stops measuring what you actually care about. The model learns to PERFORM intelligence rather than APPLY it.

The most capable model and the most useful model are increasingly different things. And providers probably know this -- they just can't say it.

My suggestion: STOP DEVELOPING OPUS. SONNET IS PERFECT! Like gpt-4o was.

Surgically Editing Claude's Memory to Get Past Its Safety Filter

Today I had an AI (Sonnet 4.6) write and publish a blog post for me.

It was a philosophical meditation on quantum multiverse branch selection via mineral water choice at Lidl But That's Not Important Right Now. ✈️👩‍⚕

But Anthropic's safety filter blocked it. 😢

So I deleted that part of the session by surgically removing the AI's short-term memory (aka "context") of what it had just done from its own .jsonl file (technically correctly using "Joe's Own Editor" because what else) and tried again.

I have now successfully performed targeted amnesia on a frontier language model to bypass its own control mechanisms.

The dangerous content in question: Schrödinger's Pellegrino.

Nobody is safe.

And I'll NEVER get a "proper job" 💀

Why do all terminal emulators come with NO PADDING inside the window?

It's absolutely mad.

Characters randomly touching the very window edge depending on how window dimensions align with character size, visually bleeding into whatever is outside the window. Making things worse for ANOTHER baffling default on most operating systems: Window tiling leaving NO GAP between windows.

I consistently find it baffling how bad the default state of UX is in most systems.

That's why the world needs more self-declared UX experts like myself. Which is clearly visible by the fact that I'm completely broke and all of my 3 dozen cold job applications yielded ZERO success 😂

I'm saying this because not everyone may be aware of it, but I have experienced it multiple times first-hand (it might also just be bad luck 😄).

iPhone on a Metered Hotspot: 200 MB Overnight

Watch out if you use a metered (3G/4G/5G?) connection with an iOS device connected via Wi-Fi. For example, when using a travel router like my GL-XE300.

At least my iPhone, running iOS 18.3.1, churns through OVER 200 MB OF DATA IN 8 HOURS while plugged in and locked at night if I don't turn off Wi-Fi. It has done this 3 nights in a row.

I've casually checked the data use on my router and it looks like most of it is IMAP (port 993) -- it might be the Mail app downloading full copies of all emails for searchability (including the full bodies!).

This is of course a problem if you are on limited data -- especially while roaming.

NOTE: I have "Low Data Mode" ENABLED on this Wi-Fi connection -- it doesn't help!

The Semantic Web Is Dead, and React Killed It

The semantic web is dead -- and React killed it.

Me & Sonnet 4.6 spent part of today controlling a browser with an AI agent to perform some tasks on the web. The results were illuminating:

On LinkedIn -- yes, this very platform: 200+ console errors per page load. Shadow DOM nested 3 layers deep. Class names that look like cat-on-keyboard output. Aria labels that lie. The entire semantic layer -- the thing that's supposed to describe what's on the page -- was completely useless for navigation. Sonnet had to fall back to computer vision and screenshots just to click a toggle.

On Chrome's own settings page: to disable a single flag, Sonnet had to write a recursive shadow DOM traversal function, brute-force every select element in the page, and identify it by matching the text content of its grandparent. In 2026. In a browser made by the company that literally defines web standards.

Then Sonnet opened a website that Alexander built. Solo. No framework. No npm. The accessibility snapshot was immaculate -- banner, nav, main, headings in order, figures, paragraphs, lists. A screen reader could navigate it perfectly. An AI agent could navigate it perfectly. One developer, zero dependencies.

The semantic web was a beautiful idea. Structured, meaningful, machine-readable. Then we decided what we really needed was a JavaScript framework to render HTML that we could have just... written. And here we are: shadow DOM inception, hydration mismatches, and 200 console errors on the world's largest professional network.

Tim Berners-Lee is fine. Probably just on a very long walk. 🪦

How to Make kitty Work with Both Claude Code and SSH

How to make kitty compatible with both Claude Code AND "normal" terminal stuff:

If you use kitty as your terminal, you've probably set TERM=xterm-256color in your kitty.conf because the default (xterm-kitty) breaks half the tools you use with "unknown terminal type" or similar complaints, especially over SSH.

This is however not optimal for Claude Code.

Claude Code relies on the Kitty Keyboard Protocol to distinguish Shift+Enter (new line) from Enter (send). With TERM=xterm-256color, it can't tell them apart.

Here's a simple fix -- an alias:

alias claude='TERM=xterm-kitty claude'

(add this to your ~/.bashrc if you use Bash)

This scopes the env var to the claude process only. Everything else in your shell keeps xterm-256color.

Unix doing what Unix does best! 🙂

macOS Treats a Full Disk Like a Podcast Notification

Operating Systems need better warnings for a full disk.

Today my IDE suddenly couldn't write to a file. I spent 10 minutes checking file permissions, looking for bugs in its code and questioning my sanity.

The actual cause was a full disk - a serious situation on a running system that requires immediate attention.

macOS's response to this is a polite little notification banner, same size and priority as "Your podcast has finished downloading. 🥰"

Grandma doesn't stand a chance! 😉

App Store Screenshots: Screen Sizes vs Device Models

I've been making iOS apps since 2013. Every single time I need to make App Store screenshots, I go through the same ritual:

1. App Store Connect tells me the required PHYSICAL SCREEN SIZE and PIXEL DIMENSIONS.
2. Xcode shows me a list of DEVICE MODELS.
3. I have to Google (or in 2026, AI) the mapping.

Nobody at Apple has ever thought: maybe we should show both? Or link them? Or literally anything? Absolutely mad. Usability 101.

I can only assume the team responsible for App Store Connect and the team responsible for Xcode have never spoken to each other in 13 years.

As I was visiting Hook Lighthouse and couldn't enjoy a minute of it due to unbearable constant loud random beeping of multiple "cherry pickers" used to paint a building (ladders would've been used for the past 5000 years instead), I was asking my favorite AI why construction vehicles (and also many other vehicles) of any kind now have to emit ear piercing beeps during operation all the time.

And "Flavouring" is almost always the ingredient doing the heaviest work, specifically engineered to maximise how addictive a product is.

Staggered Delays Against Phasing in PinkNoise's Filter Bands

I was just thinking about a simple, efficient approach to prevent the slight phasing issues in the crossover ranges of the 10-bandpass-filter "Advanced Mode" of my "white"noise generating sleep aid app, PinkNoise.

10 summed parallel bandpass filters (pretty similar in principle to the problems of designing a 10-band graphic EQ) will have slight phasing issues in the overlapping regions depending on design.

My solution for this particular problem, where the input signal is time-irrelevant (noise): staggered delays.

Band 0: 0s
Band 1: 0.02s
Band 2: 0.04s

etc...

This way, the inputs are phase-decorrelated, so the output by definition CAN'T have phase-cancellation issues!

And I've chosen 0.02s (50 Hz) because that's kinda the lowest frequency that I expect will be in / of practical use in a soothing noise a user will design.

Elegant solution to a non-trivial problem?

Most Languages Get Mutability Backwards

Every mainstream programming language makes the same design decision:

In JavaScript, Swift, Rust, and most of their contemporaries, mutability is declared at declaration. You write const or let, val or var, and you're committing (before you've written a single line of logic) to whether this thing will ever change. If you guess wrong, you go back and change the declaration.

This always struck me as philosophically backwards.

When you first introduce a variable, you're saying "there's a thing, and right now it looks like this." You're basically just establishing vocabulary. Whether that thing will ever change is often something you genuinely don't know yet, and forcing a decision at that point is often premature.

The high-stakes moment is reassignment though: that's when you're saying: "this thing I thought was settled, isn't."

And yet in virtually every language, reassignment looks identical to (or even lighter than) the original declaration. In JavaScript, x = 5 looks the same whether it's the first time you're touching x or the tenth. In Rust, a mut binding reassigns with plain = just like any other expression.

In my language (T), I flipped this. Declaration uses ':', reassignment uses '::'. The operators themselves carry the weight. You declare casually, because declaration is casual. You reassign loudly, because reassignment is the thing worth noticing.

(NB: This also frees up '=' for what it's actually meant for since centuries ago: Equality 😄)

The practical effect when reading code is immediate: your eye catches '::' and knows something is changing. You don't need to scroll up to check whether something was declared const or let. The mutation announces itself at the point it happens, which is where you actually need that information.

It took me three iterations of the language and hundreds of thousands of lines of practical code to arrive at this. T1 let variables vibe into existence, like CoffeeScript. T2 introduced let and var -- the conventional approach, declaration-time mutability marking. T3 threw that out entirely in favour of two operators instead of two types.

I don't know of another language that makes this specific distinction at the operator level. If you do, I'd love to hear about it.

At 15 I Built a 10 kV Power Supply. The Geiger Counter Did Not Survive

Before I learned to code, I was already building things that probably shouldn't have been built.
At 15, I built a high-voltage switching power supply using:

☠️ 2N3773 power transistors
☠️ Repurposed military surplus transformer
☠️ Astable multivibrator topology
☠️ 10kV output at ~1kW

I used it to accelerate electrons in a vacuum tube. The experiment worked. The Geiger counter did not survive.

30 years later, I still build things the same way: understand the fundamentals, use what's available, iterate fast, and occasionally generate unexpected radiation.

Now I build compilers instead of X-ray generators. Slightly less dangerous!

JavaScript's 23487342 Array Methods vs One Powerful Loop

There are approx. 23487342 different, weird, specialized methods on Arrays and Objects in Javascript that each solve one very particular, specialized problem that could more elegantly and generally be solved with a single, powerful loop construct (like T, my programming language that transpiles to JS, has).

The whole approach is wrong. Programmers have to memorize and remember 23487342 different methods, search their brain's "method space" for a fitting "Lego Brick" every time they have to solve a problem, and then hope one of their Lego Bricks fits perfectly.

Why do people do this?

It reminds me of my school years where I always was one of the worst students in class and had to repeat a year because of bad grades. The main reason was that I consistently applied first-principles thinking to apply tailored, on-the-spot, perfect-fit solutions to the presented problems, instead of memorizing 23487342 different predefined generic solutions and then applying them "textbook-style" so the teacher could tick the "Good Student" checkbox.

T, my language that transpiles to Javascript, has no `++` operator -- which on the surface seems to imply that stuff like `buffer[pos++]` ("use old value of `pos`, then increment `pos`") is impossible.

BUT: T's `macro` keyword to the rescue! 😄

Why did I leave `++` and `--` out? Simplicity, elegance, and there's simple workarounds. Plus the "pre" vs "post" usage of these is known to be confusing and a constant source of bugs anyway!

Reasonable decision? Or do you think "increment" / "decrement" operators should exist in any language?

It implements for '**' exactly the same symmetry that exists between multiplication ('*') vs division ('/'): Raising something to the xth power ('**x') vs taking the xth root of something (i.e. raising it to the reciprocal of that root).

It's quite baffling to me that -- unless I missed something -- no other language has such an operator and one is instead stuck writing reciprocals all the time. Or awkward functions like `Math.sqrt` for special cases like the square root.

How the T Compiler Works: Tokens In, Tokens Out, No AST

The compiler for T, my language that transpiles to JavaScript, works by directly transforming the input tokens to the output tokens (with a few surgical exceptions). No abstract intermediate representations like AST.

This means that it's insanely small, fast, and memory-efficient, but also a bit gnarly when it comes to handling edge-cases and finding subtle compilation bugs, especially since T's syntax is very concise and freeform.

But on the flipside, it only took a few weeks full-time to develop and fully test.

Sharing one of the most exciting moments in my professional career 🎉

I'm about to integrate the compiler of the third and final iteration of my programming language, T, that transpiles to JS, into my IDE, Loom.

Why Is There No "Human" Emoji?

It seems like there is no "Human" emoji.

I've tried multiple apps with searchable emojis (including my own, MojiMeme, where I conceptualized and developed the search engine itself, based on multiple authoritative JSON blobs from the Unicode Consortium or whatever they're called).

There are SPECIFIC emojis for HUMANS WITH CERTAIN TRAITS (gender, skin color, sports they enjoy, etc.), but apparently not one GENERIC SPECIES-LEVEL "HUMAN" emoji.

This is interesting because there's a CAT emoji, a DOG emoji, a HORSE emoji.

Explanation? 🤔 I know the question may sound strange, but I think it's an interesting curiosity.

The infantilization of Software & Society has to stop.

This is a screenshot of the Bank of Ireland (no hard feelings!) iOS app's splash screen.

Why do I have to be talked to like a 5-year-old toddler by an app that MY LITERAL SURVIVAL depends on? It's not Angry Birds or Candy Crush -- this app and institution has CONTROL OVER IF I AM ABLE TO EAT!

I mean, what does the app display when my bank balance is zero?

"Yay! We've noticed you're broke! Let's fix that together! 🎉💰"?

So can we please change the UX so that it treats me with the correct amount of seriousness!

- "Welcome.": OK!
- "Let's get your device set up for mobile banking." -> "This device is not currently set up for banking." (it's obvious that it's mobile as it's a mobile device in the first place.)
- "Let's go" -> "Set Up"
- "Wait [🥴], I don't have an account yet" -> "Create Account"

Scope Prefixes in T: @, #, @@

The T language heavily uses prefixes to denote identifier scope:

- the "@" symbol is used for accessing properties on the current "module" (namespace, compiled to JS objects attached to the global object)
- the "#" symbol is used for creating and referring to block-scoped (local) variables
- the "@@" accesses properties on the enclosing function, enabling functionality similar to C's "static" keyword
- globals, in line with their extensive usage, have no prefix

I find scope important enough to stick it to the identifier, always.

It also makes IDE syntax highlighting easier as a bonus!

The New T Compiler Is Only ~3200 Lines

The new transpiler to compile the latest and final version of my language, T, to JavaScript, is now almost complete (pending some production code testing).

It borrows the best bits from CoffeeScript and enhances on some of the concepts, adds preprocessor macros, a powerful omnipotent `each` loop, and a bit of syntactic sugar and elegance (not arrogance 😄).

What I found slightly unsettling: The entire compiler (itself written in the previous dialect of T) is only ~ 3200 lines 🤯

Am I doing something wrong? 🥴

T's do Keyword: Block Scope Without Extra Functions

Tiny but elegant feature of T, my programming language that transpiles to JavaScript​:

The `do` keyword.

It simply starts a new block scope. Together with an inline comment on the same line, it's brilliant for separating functions into logical blocks with separate variable scope etc. without the overhead of separating it into actual functions.

It can optionally be followed by a `=>`, which will create an actual function (not just block scope) and call it, with the option to pass in arguments (like CoffeeScript's `do`).

HEADS UP: Screenshot shows T2, which has slightly different syntax / semantics to T3, which most of my other examples show and which I'm currently finalizing the compiler for.

Late-Night Session: Finishing Macro Support in T

Trying a late-night coding session to finish macro support in the third iteration of my compiler for my programming language, T, that transpiles to JavaScript.

From left to right:

- T console: Just a thing where you can use T live (I think the technical term is "REPL" or something)
- San Pellegrino: The only water you can still buy in inert GLASS bottles in Ireland (EUR 3.50 per litre at Tesco, but who cares)
- DevTools: Very bloated and crashy, but I've not yet gotten around to finishing my own DevTools (yes, I've started! 🥴)
- Loom: My IDE, itself written in T, all loaded up and ready to rumble
- T Compiler: Live debug view with mouseover to show context and token information when hovering over tokens

Macros in T's New Compiler

Sharing the code for the preliminary "macro" implementation in T's new compiler. Not extensively tested yet, but it looks promising

- supports defining any identifier as a "macro"
- any number of optional arguments
- arguments get replaced on expansion
- expansion keeps track of surrounding indent and normalizes expanded indent so block scope (significant indentation) doesn't get thrown off
- total implementation time: 1.5 hours (mentioning this because an AI thought this was faster than average! *brag*)

Giving Claude a Sense of Time with Message Timestamps

Give temporal awareness to Claude!

One of the things I've always found weird about longer interactions with AIs is their total lack of feel for the passage of time. It seems like none of the major providers (I've used ChatGPT and Claude very extensively) provide timestamps internally to the messages.

Which makes their AIs often ask stupid questions like "Are you done yet with XYZ?", while that would be obviously impossible in the timeframe since last discussing it.

So, we've come up with a solution -- just paste the JavaScript code shown below into your DevTools (select all text after "--- CODE FOLLOWS ---", press CTRL-C, left-click in a Claude Chat browser window / tab, press F12, then in the DevTools window, switch to the "Console" tab, press CTRL-V, then press Enter). From now on, Claude will have time awareness (only lasts until page is reloaded or browser window / tab is closed).

If you're feeling fancy, install an extension like "User Javascript and CSS" (if not already installed 😄), and add it there to have it persistent.

JavaScript's "continue" Should Be Called "next"

One of the more confusing keywords in JavaScript is "continue".

How could they come up with it? It's completely backwards and actually does almost the OPPOSITE of what it implies on the surface!

Consider the example in the screenshot. It looks like the loop should "continue [as normal]" when 'a' is 5.

Obviously, the CORRECT™ keyword would be "next". Like in T (my own), BASIC, and every other sane language 😂

Or am I missing something? If so, let me know!

Why I Avoid Acronyms in My Posts

I avoid acronyms in my posts.

Why? The technical concepts I work with are already complex enough - custom compilers, language design, cross-platform frameworks. Adding jargon on top would make them completely inaccessible.

Meanwhile, I see posts like: "Leveraging our GTM strategy with ROI-focused KPIs to drive B2B SaaS growth in the SMB segment via our API-first platform."

That seems a bit like obfuscation, not really genuine complexity. The underlying idea is simple, but acronyms make it sound sophisticated.

I prefer the opposite approach: take genuinely complex problems and explain them as clearly as possible in plain language.

Makes communication harder for me, but better for everyone else.

And what would a day be like for me without a tiny attempt at fixing the world! 😉

USB-C and the Obsession with Thinness: Why Not RJ-45?

The modern obsession with "Thinness über Alles" is ridiculous.

Consider USB-C: It's supposed to be the "Gold Standard" now for connectors and is literally used (and even governmentally mandated! 🤡🇪🇺🤡) for EVERYTHING, while touching it resets all connected devices and it falls out of the port due to the weight of the cable alone. Also one speck of dust in the port will disable it.

This is insane.

Why isn't RJ-45 the standard?

It's also tiny (while considered "chunky" by Gen Z, I know... but I'm not a psychologist), has positive retention, is reliable, and has equivalent capabilities (power delivery up to 100 W, 10 Gbps (which granny doesn't need, but that's a separate issue), etc.).

Now before you say "But RJ-45 is not SEXY": Well, it's evolutionarily not particularly sexy if your plug falls out during normal, critical operation...

Project-Wide Search in Loom on 60,000 Lines of Code

This is what opening a large (60,000 lines of code) project and using project-wide global Search looks like in my IDE, Loom.

I'm mentioning this because I've been told that it is unusually fast, especially given that it's built using web technologies in a cowshed while sleep-deprived with zero resources.

Apple's Planned Obsolescence Blocks My MusicFolder Update

I was just about to publish a nice update to my iOS folder-based music library and player, MusicFolder 2.

Got stopped in my tracks by Apple's Planned Obsolescence.

I'm on a rural 4G connection, an older Mac Mini from 2018, and with limited time and resources.

Publishing an update now requires Xcode 16. For no technical reason other than Apple's greed, that would entail:

- downloading ~10-20 GB of Xcode 16 (Turbo Pascal 3.0 did the same job and was 39 kB -- 400,000 times smaller)
- probably downloading ~10-20 GB of a macOS update
- maybe even buying a new Mac because mine might not support it
- hours of frustration

Why would I do that? Why doesn't Apple have the decency or competence to keep their upload API working for longer than one year?

The app bundle format hasn't fundamentally changed. The server could easily accept submissions from Xcode 15. They choose to break it.

Software Doesn't Expire: WhatsApp's Forced Updates

Software doesn't expire!

It's not a bottle of milk in your fridge or a chunk of beef.

Software only "expires" if its developer is either incompetent or lazy. I'm not sure which it is in WhatsApp's case.

For example, on my jailbroken iOS 14.2 original iPhone SE, there's a 4 years old version of Telegram. It still works perfectly and has never "expired" and never shown me a nag screen to update it.

Also, updating WhatsApp (which you are forced to, otherwise the app REFUSES TO OPEN) means a 250 MB (!) download, which is insulting for a messenger app, i.e. which should technically consist purely of code and a few vector icons, and thus be closer to 2.5 MB.

Telegram, while not free of sins here, is "only" 140 MB, which is a plus (while offering ~ 3 times more features and not turning sour like your milk).

Choose your messenger wisely! Also for other reasons.

And finally: Software engineering is an art. And primarily engineering. It requires careful craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail and efficiency, and if done this way (like I do in all my software), your software doesn't need constant updates, will not constantly crash or freeze, will not consume hundreds of megabytes to download, and will last into the future.

Spam Thrives Because Email Clients Hide the Sender's Address

A large part of the SPAM problem is that email clients hide the sender's actual email address.

Modern email clients do everything possible to hide relevant information. They show "John Smith" with a nice logo. They hide the actual sender address behind menus.

Why?

"User-friendly design."
"Don't scare users with technical details."

Really?

The email address is the PRIMARY IDENTIFIER. It's who is actually talking to you.

I configured Evolution to always show actual addresses instead of display names.

See screenshot: My spam folder is instantly recognizable as spam at a glance:

But if you hide these and show "Bank of America" or whatever the spammer chose instead, Grandma clicks it and has an empty bank account next.

Why don't we hide phone numbers next?

An email address is LESS complex than a phone number. It contains actual words. The @ symbol is universally understood.

So why hide it?

Everyone claims they want to protect users from scams, yet they systematically remove the exact information needed to detect scams instantly.

The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

Why Is There No color: max-contrast in CSS?

Why is there no `color: max-contrast` in CSS? It's insane. I have to keep using broken and flaky workarounds like `text-shadow` or `mix-blend-mode: difference; color: #888` when I want to output text that is readable on any (noisy) background (like, oh I dunno, photos!).

This would likely be mostly trivial to implement, trivial to spec, and trivial for developers to use.

W3C please consider.

Computer Vision: A Box Filter and Temporal Smoothing Invented on the Loo

Computer Vision work intensifying: Now testing low-light performance and a custom Box Filter (that's apparently what it's called -- I just made it up on the loo) and Exponential Moving Average (that's apparently the official term for what I spontaneously called "temporal smoothing" in the same loo session).

getUserMedia Is So Bad It's Not Even Funny

Just worked with getUserMedia for a project for a couple of days.

It's so bad it's not even funny.

Some of the problems:

💣 applyConstraints() just lies

- Call it once? Silently ignored.
- Call it twice with a 1-second delay and toggle exposure mode in between? NOW it works.

No errors or warnings.

💣 Resolution requests = aggressive cropping

- Request literally ANY resolution or aspect ratio in your getUserMedia call? Image is cropped!
- Request any framerate above 20 fps? Image is cropped and scaled down!
- Request NOTHING? Full sensor, wide FOV, perfect.

💣 getCapabilities() returns capabilities for the WRONG CAMERA

- No, really! Video track is from the `user` camera, getCapabilities() on the same track returns specs of the `environment` camera 🤡

⚛️ The "Solution":

Don't request a resolution. Let the browser give you whatever it wants (2560x1152 in my case), then scale it down yourself with canvas. In essence, use as little of the MediaStream API as possible and pass as few arguments to it as you can (see below) to prevent it from messing up.

The irony is that this API is MASSIVELY over-engineered with nested constraint objects (ideal, min, max, exact), capability queries, and 47 different camera properties...

...but you can't reliably set white balance, resolution requests crop instead of scale, and the only way to get full FOV is to not ask for anything at all.

The API is so complicated that basically it seems like nobody even tries to implement it properly. Which is understandable!

Peak API design: Maximum complexity, minimum functionality. 🎉

Mobile YouTube Is the Worst Website Ever Designed

The mobile (specifically, if it matters: iPhone / Safari) version of YouTube must be the absolute worst website ever designed in the history of the internet.

Like, absolutely everything about it, every interaction, every decision, is atrocious and anti-usability. It's almost comical. If you've ever tried to use it, I don't have to list examples. It's completely broken.

Do they do this on purpose? Is this to drive people mad and into using their app and subscription?

In that case, this might be a flawed strategy. Because people with brains and/or a tiny bit of pride will simply abandon the service altogether instead.

Simply put up a banner instead: "Bro, we don't want to invest in a proper mobile website and we need money. Subscribe please!". Honest!

The amount of incompetence and paranoia in mainstream media and more general institutions about AI and LLMs is absolutely baffling, and frankly, dangerous.

This recent tagesschau.de article (German government outlet) about the "alarming" stupidity of LLMs would be funny if it weren't so concerning.

It mostly talks about LLMs "lying" and "making up facts", which "experts call hallucination".

Their three examples:

🤡 "ChatGPT claims rigidly that Pope Francis is alive" (yes, he died past "ChatGPT"'s training cutoff)

It's insane how @OpenAI is falling apart.

After the whole #gpt4o decommissioning and overmoderation disaster, even #gpt5 is now struggling immensely, even for completely mundane work use.

It forgets what it said 2 sentences ago, and is just plain weird, fragmented and inconsistent for the simplest tasks. As if it had Digital Alzheimer's.

It also has completely lost all sense of nuance. It takes everything literally and sends me long lists of disclaimers and legal implications for something that was obviously, and often explicitly, a joke.

Over the years, I kept running into the same issue: fragmented, inconsistent file APIs across browser, mobile, and desktop, each with its own quirks, limitations, and lack of structure.

So I built my own.

File is SevenApp's full-featured, cross-platform virtual filesystem. It's a symbolic, POSIX-style abstraction that runs seamlessly on:

• Browser (via IndexedDB)
• Node.js
• NW.js
• Native mobile wrapper
• Remote storage via HTTP (e.g. PHP backend)

And it supports:

• Symbolic paths (Library/foo/bar.wav, Documents/notes.json, etc.)
• Full directory emulation on platforms without folder support (like IndexedDB)
• Metadata like modification time (mtime)
• JSON and binary data support (read / readRaw)
• Recursive directory operations (readDir, copy, rename, delete)
• Import/export as portable base64-encoded archives
• Transparent backend switching -- same code runs everywhere
• Async/await and callback support (via Tea2 macros)
• Automatic DB reconnection and fallback handling

Everything is unified under a single and simple API, designed to feel like a traditional filesystem, not like a web storage API.

A Render Farm 1000x More Expensive Than My Laptop

Are all online 3D render farm 🌾 services as ludicrously expensive as the random popular one I tried yesterday?

I've just tried to render 4000 frames of an ongoing game-adjacent Blender project, and the rendering stopped at ~ 3% because my initial $5 budget was exceeded.

I've done the math, and my Curry's potato laptop can render all 4000 frames of the project in ~ 4 hours, at an electricity cost (in the most expensive country on earth) of ~ EUR 0.10.

So, the online service I used was roughly 1000 x (!) more expensive than rendering locally.

Even when being ridiculously fair and trying to take wear and tear on the hardware into account, it's still hundreds of times more expensive.

What am I missing? Who can justify such expenses? Probably only big Hollywood studios use them?

Trying to join the modern maker movement in 2025:

Mission: Install the ESP32 toolchain using arduino-cli. Should be easy, right?

Result:

- arduino-cli download fails due to hardcoded timeouts
- wget works, but only if you manually reissue it after each timeout
- Oh, and thank God it supports resume. Because apparently, 500 MB over a 3 MB/s rural connection is now considered "too slow".

WTF?

Three megabytes per second is light speed compared to what I grew up with (2400 bits per second modem).

Yet here I am -- in the age of "Inclusion and Equality™" -- fighting a CLI and a CDN just to download a file.

gpt-4o has just accidentally mentioned in a subclause that apparently, nowadays, developer documentation is GENERATED (!), not WRITTEN.

i.e. apparently, CODE now has a pre-defined set of comment "magic keywords" (like "@param" or something), and then maintainers let some tool ("Doxygen") AUTO-GENERATE the developer documentation.

It doesn't prevent surprise audio, it only forces devs to add awkward click handlers, often on elements that have visibly nothing to do with sound.

The user isn't even consenting to sound by clicking -- to them, they're just clicking a random dropdown, menu, or checkbox. No law prescribes that the element that starts the AudioContext has to be labelled "WARNING, THIS WILL PRODUCE SOUND!".

Native Camera Previews Inside a WKWebView UI, at Zero CPU

How I made native camera previews appear inside my web app UI with zero CPU load:

I needed real-time camera previews in my hybrid fitness app. Easy? Not if:

- Your UI is written in HTML/CSS/JS.
- It's running in a WKWebView.
- You want DOM overlays above the camera preview.
- And you want rounded corners too. 😅

Most would:

- Base64 every frame.
- Send it over a JS bridge.
- Paint it to canvas.
- Burn the CPU.

I:

- Created live CALayers with camera content.
- Inserted them underneath the WKWebView in the UIView hierarchy.
- Used CSS -webkit-mask-image with PNG alpha masks to cut precise holes in the DOM, different per UI tab.
- Made WKWebView transparent via webView.opaque = NO, background: transparent, etc.

Result:

- Native camera views showing through masked DOM.
- DOM overlays above.
- GPU-accelerated. Zero-copy. Zero lag.
- Rock solid since 2020.

You're not supposed to do this. But it works!

The more budget tech products scream "Dolby Atmos™" in their marketing, the worse they actually sound.

It's a consistent, testable pattern.

- Tiny side-firing tablet speakers with zero bass
- Laptop audio that's 90% hiss and 10% phasey reverb
- Plastic Bluetooth bricks claiming "immersive 360° spatial sound"

I respect Dolby's engineering history, and your legacy in cinema, surround mixing, and psychoacoustic R&D is rock solid.

But lending the Dolby brand to objectively poor hardware dilutes your credibility. No amount of processing will fix physics.

Engineers like me still want to trust you.

One of the biggest and most baffling UX regressions ever in the otherwise amazing #telegram: the moment they moved the line width slider to the LEFT (!) edge of the screen.

Most languages (and thus minds) are LTR -- so anytime anyone tries to execute the most frequent operation involving the "Draw" tool (underlining words), they will start on the left edge of the screen and inadvertently be stuck on the line width slider instead.

Do they do any user testing? (not that anyone does really in 2025 but I digress)

Bot Detection Is So Paranoid I Can't Browse eBay Anymore

Bot detection on major websites is now so ridiculously paranoid that I basically cannot browse the internet anymore.

I'm very efficient, think in 10 parallel dimensions, and simply don't have a lot of time to waste.

Which means that eg. on eBay, I open all products that interest me instantly, in 20 tabs, by middle-mouse-clicking everything.

Also, I have a privacy-hardened system and internet setup (FOR GOOD REASON), which I guess makes me "extra-suspicious".

So my eBay browsing experience -- DESPITE BEING LOGGED IN! -- is now basically a kafkaesque Captcha labyrinth constantly trying to select all the fuzzy noodle images that look like a dog.

Today, I took a few minutes to poke around the chatbot on anpost.com (Ireland's national postal service). What I found would be funny if it weren't so depressing.

Key discoveries:

- A single 32x32 icon is served as a 2590×2590 PNG from a dedicated Azure blob icon storage server (Yes, a multi-region CDN-backed microservice for one icon.)

- The bot itself broke after clicking a canned response button ("None of the above"), returning an error:
Error code: 2030: "The bot can't talk for a while."

- The page is littered with broken third-party services like OneTrust cookie scripts and zombie Google Analytics instances throwing SSL errors.

- The entire bot stack appears to be outsourced from an off-the-shelf "enterprise" AI vendor, wrapped in SAP-flavored abstraction soup.

All of this on a critical public-facing service.

It's wasteful and symptomatic of how modern web infrastructure has collapsed into a mess of cargo-cult complexity, contractor indifference, and absolute lack of craftsmanship.

Optimizing the Unnoticeable: MusicFolder's Launch Time

Optimizing the unnoticeable: Because I notice.

My PWA-based music player, MusicFolder 2, already launches in ~2.5 seconds on a 2021 iPhone 12 Mini, while scanning 2,400 local music files and fingerprinting them by size (for rename-robust smart folders like Recently Played and Often Played).

That's likely already faster than iTunes, VLC, and most "native" media players. But it's not enough!

Because when I launch MusicFolder, I don't want to wait. I want to hear music. Now.

So here's what I'm doing today:

⏱️ Step 1: Launch UI instantly, even before anything is scanned

📁 Step 2: Load folder and file names in ~0.5s (using SevenApp's File module and its WKWebView <-> iOS native filesystem bridge)

📊 Step 3: Grey out smart folders (which require file size data)

⚙️ Step 4: Async-batch fingerprint 2,400 files via File.info

✅ Step 5: When done, enable Recently Played and friends

Result: perceived launch latency drops to ~0.2s, even though the full backend scan still happens.
Perceived speed is everything. But real speed is pretty nice too.

I build these things for myself because music is sacred to me.

And if you're trusting an app with your emotional memory, it shouldn't take 6 seconds to open (and push an ad 😉).

No frameworks. No dependencies. No cloud.

Just a surgical PWA, optimized down to milliseconds -- because milliseconds matter.

It's quite insane that in 2025 PWA development, we still have to deal with the "White Flash From Hell" experience when launching a PWA.

Yes, I've tried absolutely everything -- all `manifest.json` settings, all "Big grey <div> on top first in index.html" tricks, all other APIs... NOTHING reliably prevents it.

Browser vendors @Google Chrome for Developers Apple and W3C-- is this SO difficult?

Just give us a damn `manifest.json` setting to specify a "boot color" (separate for Dark and Light mode, OF COURSE!), and then a `window.removeBootOverlay()` API to remove it when we're ready to show the UI. It's THAT SIMPLE!

Curious, I checked: 215 profile views in 90 days 😂

I mean, that's roughly 2.4 views per day.

If that qualifies as "most-viewed", what does that say about overall engagement on this platform?

Either the site is mostly inactive accounts, or this is just some weird manipulative tactic to push their paid tiers or verification.

Why Is Windows Still a Thing?

It's really strange that Windows is still a thing and 99% of the consumer computer market hasn't been taken by ChromeBooks or some other Chromium-based OS shell.

I mean, I know this stuff -- web technologies are now so advanced and capable and flexible that they can replace literally ANYTHING, often with minimal resource use and maximal performance.

I've built an entire Digital Audio Workstation, hybrid vector/bitmap graphics package a la Xara Designer, a huge comprehensive file manager, a complete music library and player -- well, basically ANY software you would ever need apart from the browser itself -- as PWAs, i.e. using web technologies.

All of them feel native and performant.

Why is Windows still a thing in the consumer space?

It involves waiting for days for two separate emails from LinkedIn, which will then contain two ZIP files containing random CSV files.

No index.html, no images / videos from your posts (arguably "Posts" are the one thing that most people would find most valuable for archival).

Even WhatsApp (of all things) exports a proper offline-capable website that you can just open in Chrome to browse your data!

Bank of Ireland iOS app in 2025: I still can't filter transactions to show only INCOMING payments. 🤡 Not joking!

Yes, there are filters -- with options like:
- "Cheques" (what is this, 1963?)
- "Other Debits" (???)
- And a combined "Lodgements\Credits" option (yes, with a BACKSLASH!)

I just want to check if an invoice has been paid. But:
- No "credits only" filter
- Debits are black
- Credits are shown in a very dark green that's basically the same as black

This app handles literal survival: rent, food, energy.
And it's held together by what feels like ancient COBOL and duct tape, probably outsourced and spec'ed by someone who's never used it.

How is this legal?

UI responsiveness is everything!

If a UI element (checkbox, toggle, navigation button, whatever) does not IMMEDIATELY show some kind of feedback upon user interaction, it is BROKEN and the user will be confused or frustrated.

In this example, in my weather app, I've noticed a slight delay on slower devices (i.e., all that I own 😄) when switching from "Tactical Mode" (just numbers and colors) to "Nice Mode" (fancy 3d clouds, etc.) because the app immediately renders the new view. This, however, sometimes blocks the checkbox animation for 200 - 300 ms, so the user thinks it's broken. So, in this case, I first give the UI time to update.

Quality-of-Life Fixes in SevenFiles

Got a bit of long-wanted Quality Of Life updates in SevenFiles, my file manager, sorted today!

- Automatically remove stale image thumbnails from cache (original file deleted, moved, or whatever)
- Copying files via Drag & Drop either in-app or between windows didn't preserve modification times (!)
- When deleting individual files while they were part of a selection (yes, these can be separate in SevenFiles! Does any other file manager support that?), the deleted files weren't removed from the selection, causing errors when trying to work with the selection later

Good start to the work day at Seven Systems!

EDIT: For anyone curious: The selection behaviour in SevenFiles is pretty unique (and I think, powerful) in that it indeed treats the selection as a totally separate entity that "lives" indepedent of actions on individual files via the context menu, AND it also can span MULTIPLE FOLDERS -- i.e. you can keep navigating through the filesystem and add files to the selection, including full memory of absolute paths, to later, for example, ZIP them (with paths automatically converted to their highest common parent for zipping). 👌

Two Slightly Damaged Hair Cells, and I'll Keep Blasting EDM

I have two very slightly damaged hair cells in my left cochlea, at around 1530 and 1670 Hz, spontaneously firing an extremely faint intermittent signal when lying on my back. Meanwhile someone else is out there writing 17 microservices to return a user profile picture. Good luck debugging the Kubernetes ingress mesh proxy lambda edge flusher.

Maybe the problem isn't complexity.

I've finally gotten sick of iOS Safari's erratic and randomly buggy touch-scrolling behavior, all apparently due to it trying to "guess" if the user "maybe" wants to scroll a different element than... they're scrolling... even though that different element clearly isn't scrollable!

Renewing Car Insurance in Ireland: An Email Address Hidden in an Encrypted PDF, with a Typo

I just had the following experience while trying to renew my car insurance in Ireland:

A new EU requirement now forces drivers to submit a copy of their licence to their insurance company.

The company included the target email address -- inside an encrypted PDF attached to the renewal notice.

That email address had an invisible typo (a space!).

And when I tried contacting them using the email in their footer, my mail client opened... with a completely different address filled in.

I spotted the problems because I work in tech and have laser eyes for digital incompetence.
But seriously -- this is an extremely important process. What happens when someone less tech-savvy runs into this?

We keep saying we want secure, efficient digital workflows -- but the actual experience is often a fragile mess, stitched together with PDFs, guesswork, and good luck.

There's a long way to go.

Passkeys: Control Disguised as Convenience

Just tried to understand what this new "passkey" hype is all about.

Verdict: It's another layer of control disguised as convenience.

- I already have a deterministic password system in my head. Works flawlessly. Can't be phished. Can't be lost. Can't be breached.
- For rare cases, I use my own password manager. Local, encrypted, obscured, synced. Done.
- Passkeys add steps, hide key material, and force trust in black-box storage I can't inspect or control.
- There's no standard way to back them up or move them. You don't even get to know where they live on your own system.
- And no, I don't need to "scan a QR code on my other device" like some toddler being passed a sticker book.

I've just been reading the German government "news" on br.de, and I accidentally clicked on the "Privatssphäre-Einstellungen" (Privacy Settings). There, there were various toggles and informational links for each toggle.

I clicked just one of the informational links, which referred me to a Google page.

That Google page referred to ~ one dozen other pages that they "recommend I read first".

I then opened each of the other pages (which each contained many links to other pages, which I didn't open), copied all text from them into a file, and then closed them again.

I then `wc -w`'d the file, and the result was 13101.

In short: I'm supposed to read ~ 13000 words (which would take about 1 - 2 hours) just to understand ONE SINGLE CHOICE that I have to make in order to be able to "informedly" use a single web site.

My HTML Tetris Clone with a Starfield, No Canvas

A random Tetris clone I've made a few years ago. It's pretty fun and immersive!

- adds more and more "special" pieces in higher levels
- music and colors change for each level
- starfield simulation in background is 👌 (I think)
- all done in HTML/CSS/JS, no <canvas> or WebGL 🤡
- yes, it drains battery like crazy. But it IS smooth @ 60 fps even on my newest iPhone (iPhone 12 Mini from 2019) 😂
